Mission majnu full movie review – Overall performance

Sidharth Malhotra plays the same happy-go-lucky character in almost all of his recent films. While he is definitely picking up different characters, the characters all seem to have a similar sense of humor, body language, or emotional space in some way. Even his patriotism has mellowed considerably. It was great to see him in ‘Shershaah,’ as that character was much more intense. However, Sidharth Malhotra fails to elevate this ‘Mission Majnu’ character to that level of fervent patriotism. It’s disappointing to see him miss the mark again after a terrible ‘Thank God’.

Rashmika Mandanna as a blind girl is also bad. Despite her blindness, you can see her eyeballs waver towards the location where the other characters are looking on numerous occasions. Fortunately, she has less screen time in the film; otherwise, there would have been many more shots throughout. Despite having massacred the key characteristics of a blind person, she outperforms Sidharth Malhotra in justifying some of the character’s finer emotional moments.

The child-like curiosity, the innocence in the smile, the coyness in the open display of affection, and so on are a few of the finer nuances that she has successfully brought to the character. The character would have been much more lovable and memorable if she had put in a lot more effort to perfect the blind act.

Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi are also good in their smaller roles, but given that they are both uncovered spies, it would have been nice to learn more about what they did when they weren’t with the main character.

Stellar actors such as Mir Sarwar and Parmeet Sethi have been given minor roles, which is an insult to their stature and talent.

Mission majnu full movie review: Script, Direction & Technical Aspects

The film’s numerous flaws can be attributed to Shantanu Bagchi’s direction and the writing of Aseem Arrora, Sumit Batheja, and Parveez Shaikh.

In order to depict the late 1970s, the screenplay is filled with terrible VFX-laden shots.

Furthermore, the portrayal of Pakistanis as fools of the first water is nonsense. I understand that all Indian films portray Pakistanis as slightly stupid, but this film takes it to an entirely new level.

Then, when making a film based on historical events, you shouldn’t try to take too many cinematic liberties with them. For example, according to what we’ve all learned in history classes, the Israelis only became involved in the nuclear weapons supremacy conflict between India and Pakistan in the 1980s (around 1984). However, the scene is depicted in the film, which is set during the tenure of Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who served as PM from 1977 to 1979.

There is also a scene depicting India’s Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s iconic phone call to Pakistan’s General Zia, in which he informs him that he has proof that Pakistan is attempting to test nuclear weapons. The phone call itself is overly dramatic, as if you’re watching a terribly ugly break-up scene between two jilted lovers. The next scene, in which the Pakistani General slams his head of defence and other officers, is even more dramatic. While there is no evidence to show how the conversations must have gone, it is reasonable to assume that as heads of state, they would speak with much more dignity.

Moving on, the film’s soundtrack does not do the film justice. Despite Sonu Nigam’s powerful vocals, ‘Maati Ko Maa Kehte Hain‘ does not elicit the same patriotic emotion that ‘Sandese Aate Hai’ or ‘Kandhon Se Milte Hai Kandhe’ did in ‘Border’ and ‘Lakshya,’ respectively. ‘Raba Janda’ is still a good song on its own, but it has no place in the script. It could have simply been a promotional track.

The cinematography of Bijitesh De also does not help the sinking ship. The late 1970s era isn’t as well-crafted as it could have been. There are shots of fighter planes and weapon carrier planes that were not even invented at the time and were still shown in the film, which was set in the 1970s. The VFX also seems to be very low on performance, and not at the level which was expected from a film like ‘Mission Majnu’.

Nitin Baid and Siddharth S. Pande’s editing is good. It keeps the climax taut while also providing some patriotic feel-good factor. They’ve also managed to keep the film’s length reasonably short, which deserves praise.
